Escuela infantil y colegio de primaria. Crevillente

Nursery and primary school. Crevillent

Plano de situación/Site plain
Arquitecto/Architect:
José María Urzelai

Sol a plomo, luz cegadora.

The sun is beating down, the light is blinding. The plot lies at a distance from the centre, in the dense belt of edge-of-town buildings grouped around the main road, facing the edge of the natural open scrubland. It slopes steeply and is irretrievably lost in the disastrous build environment.

In the local plan, the site is divided in two by a restricted access corridor for underground public utility services. As the school complex is run by the local government, this corridor can be assigned to the school and the two ends of the corridor, located halfway up the slope, can be used as the school entrances. This private street provides the starting point for the itineraries, runs between the playgrounds like a core and helps to organise the buildings around this void.

The nursery school is located at the top of the site, sunk into the ground on the northern side but placed away from the retaining wall to create a private yard for the classrooms. The main façade faces onto the playground, linked in turn to the central access roadway.

The nursery school is laid out on a single floor, arranged linearly along a corridor around this main yard. The cloister-type scheme is inverted at the entrance, where the corridor is shifted towards the street and separated from the yard, like an antechamber leading to the classrooms.

The obsession with protection from the sun explains the oversized corridors, designed as a continuous porch supported by tubular steel lattices that cast shadow grids over the ground. The Cartesian layout generates smaller yards between the buildings and the trapezoidal course of the retaining wall, where the service building is also located. The many transparencies and cross-views aim to show the simplicity of the underlying design. The Corbusierian forms serving the teaching blocks complete the brief for this complex.

The primary school has greater requirements and occupies all the lower part of the site. The entrance is next to that of the nursery school. The teaching area is approached by a large raised walkway, marked by the magnificent trees that were already on the site, which runs alongside the rough face of the gymnasium and leads to the great opening at the threshold of the main building.

The two identical storeys in the upper part of the building are occupied by classrooms, sharing the open space as far as the south frontage as a larger-scale common facility. The podium that this upper block stands on has specialised classrooms around small courtyards set perpendicular to the corridor. The general administration, gym and dining room and the retaining wall of the central roadway form the sides of the main playground.

Between yards and lights, the sharp shadows draw figures on the concrete faces, rough render and yellow earth, establishing the changing limits of the buildings.
