Arquitecto/Architect:
Valencia
Extension to Immaculate Heart of Mary School. Valenica

Behind this building I see not only a demanding way of understanding his profession but also (I have known José Luis Izquierdo for many years) the spirit of his closeness to the world of children and his passion for nature.

The children who attend this school must feel good in the spaces of the new block. It is a leafy, varied world that changes greatly with the hours, where they are sure to want to run around and play hide and seek, make new friends as they talk in a corner or shout to each other during break. These are things we adults remember and a sensitive architect relives when designing a school.

This architect’s concern for nature and his keenness on gardening are a constant feature of his work. Here we have an example in the unusual choice of the roof garden as another façade that the building presents to the city: small plants give a thick shade that keeps the roof cool. They retain the humidity without polluting and with practically no maintenance. This is the type of solution that makes us feel good and reconciles us with the hope for a future of ever more natural options.

These things are undoubtedly important. Whereas they are so often left in the background, in this project they are evident. However, on their own they would not have sufficed for this building to win a prize of this nature, which undoubtedly has to emphasise the values that are proper to architectural discipline and culture.

Here, the clarity of the project enables the qualities of the architecture to be grasped immediately.

The ground plan explains the relationship with the existing buildings and with the city. The classroom block and its access gallery constitute a visual background that contains the playground space and shapes the basic structure of the building, placing the transverse axis facing precisely south and announcing the studied section. The rest of the secondary brief is more flexible and slips around and under this structure to fit in with the corner and affirm the boundaries.

The cross–section explains the origin of the project.

At this point it seems necessary to make a reference to Mediterranean architecture and its complexity of meanings and examples. It is found both in the monumental classical form that affirms itself in the face of nature and in the depth of the clear semidarkness of an Ibizan house. It is there in the shadows and chiaroscuros of courtyards, screens, shelters and projections. This section is an example of these values: protection against the summer sun and use of the sun in winter, a criss–cross of light and views, nuances and veilings of a light that vibrates. All this is meditated on and brought to maturity in the details, the syntax of an abundant palette of well–balanced materials.

Respect for what has been inherited and a positive contribution to the space of the city seem to be synthesised in the magnificent new door that has been opened in the old brick perimeter wall of the school.

This COACV prize is undoubtedly a brilliant landmark in an sure, unhurried career that took off with the first Thyssen Prize and has achieved notable successes. In my opinion, the prize is deserved.

The children will not be the only people who are happy with this new block.

Si no fuera tan alto...

This school is for children
This memorandum is child–shaped
but it is for adults.

The extension to the Immaculate Heart of Mary school is an independent pavilion.

Among other things, this independence means another time and another technology close to the current school (great architecture, signed by Borrel), to the Neo–Gothic church that flanks the complex and gives it character and to the sober but not inferior Convent or "Home" as the nuns like to call it.

The New Pavilion extension arises in the midst of these stimuli. In essence, it is no more than a covered box placed on piles as Le Corbusier or Mies Van der Rohe would understand it. The necessary services are stuck on like patches, but they are submitted to alignments and in the end they make sense of a single building, the Pavilion.

Red clay bricks, made in Valencia by a pressing method, form good looking and technologically sound fabrics that define and organise the space of the interior. A concrete that is pleasant in both texture and workmanship helps to root the Pavilion to the ground, connects it to the changing rooms through the cylinder of the toilets and, in general, defines the basic structural elements.

The shade and balance on the ground floor contrast with the harshness of the sports grounds, as do the peace and quiet at the end, in the triangle where the younger children plan. Natural materials, a variety of colours for a variety of children, toilets for everyone (which were not there before) and benches.

A meeting place, a new focus on the activity in the schoolyard; a background for a frame, a sail, a culmination of the view from the present school.

The classrooms above have good orientation but "the block"... Oh dear, the block! It cuts out the warm sun in winter. If only it were not so high...

Behind the windows a service corridor, free of pollution, covers, filters the afternoon sun and guards from peeping eyes... its protection is necessary.

The toilets down at the end, please.

The teachers do well. The same orientation but more room, more in the mornings and a courtyard in which to read and walk.

The linear distributor or corridor. What a great place! Corridors are out of fashion. People say that other solutions are better, but if we get the proportions right...

At the end, circling the toilets behind the wall on Pérez Galdós avenue, come the changing rooms. So many years without changing rooms... The most discreet place for an intimate, closed, occasional area.

Storage rooms underneath. They are always necessary. Flanked by the goods lift and the car park, all well aired.

The schoolyard, more of a courtyard than before, more contained, better defined, more intimate and protected from the "block opposite".

And the roof has flowers, so all the neighbourhood can enjoy it.

Since its position in this city block is lower than the surrounding buildings, which are much higher and tower over it, an ECOLOGICAL FLAT ROOF was designed.

Orderly beds of Sedum of various types, which have a shallow root system, are planted in a layer of compost with Arlite for protection against the excessive heat of the sun and bordered by Losa Filtrón paving tiles. The underlying moisture proofing is a sheet of root–proof Rhenofol CG 1.2 PVC, laid on a flat levelling screed and protected by two layers of Feltemper 300 felt. The drainage outlets are 5 mm higher than the PVC sheet so that it is kept humid and keeps the compost layer humid.

Once the plants have grown evenly they provide natural surface shade and a degree of thermal and sound insulation for the classroom floor below that is far greater than the best quality of high density conventional insulation could achieve. This not only contributes to an extraordinary saving in energy but also replaces expanded polystyrene or similar non biodegradable materials that pollute the atmosphere with a totally ecological method.

The maintenance of this roof cover is practically nil. The choice of appropriate plants makes watering unnecessary, as it is replaced by the natural humidity supplied by the system.

This is one of the first ecological roofs to be built in Spain and the first in the Mediterranean area and in the Valencian Community.

From an urbanism point of view, the location of this roof within a city block that is protected and dominated by the surrounding buildings required a new, exemplary solution that would add beauty to the city.
