Ajuntament de Torrent

Torrent Town Council

It was in the year 2002 that the town council of Torrent convened its 1st biennial Ciutat de Torrent architecture prize, 2000-2002. This initiative aimed to reward the best private-initiative buildings built within the municipal boundaries, honouring both their developers and their architects.

A period of two years, accredited by the date of the first occupancy licence, marks the cut-off point when the first selection of buildings is made by town hall officials.  The final decisions are taken by a jury which includes the architect who last won the prize, a representative from the Valencia College of Architects and a representative from the Architecture School at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

The prize-giving ceremony is a formal occasion held in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall and the prize-winning work and the rest of the buildings selected are featured in a well-presented publication.

The results of the three biennial prizes awarded to date is clearly positive, in that it attempts to foster pride in work well done and is setting a positive trend in the largely unfortunate ensemble of anodyne buildings that invades our towns and cities.

This biennial prize demonstrates that it is possible not only to conceive but also to sell architecture which is committed to its times, shorn of fake styles and aberrant constructive solutions: as already mentioned, the competition only accepts entries developed through private initiatives and, logically, subject to the laws of the market.

As a result, the Board of Directors of the Official College of Architects of the Valencian Community has awarded the Special Prize for Contribution to Architecture to Torrent Town Council. With this initiative, which we hope will continue for many years and be an example to other parts of this region, new contributions are appreciated more and brought closer to society and the public discovers the importance of architect-designed architecture.

Congratulations to Torrent Town Council and to the prize-winning architects of the three biennials held to date: Juan Pablo Mas in the 1st biennial, Ignacio Docavo, Gema Casani y Jesús Felipe Mesa in the 2nd and José E. Mortes y Soledad Candela, winners of the 3rd and latest Ciutat de Torrent architecture prize.
