Arquitectura rural valenciana.

Rural valencian architecture. Types of houses and an analysis of their architecture

The Valencian Government’s Ministry of Culture, Education and Science is drawing up a General Inventory of the Ethnological Wealth of the Valencian Community in order to divulge, preserve and publicise our heritage. Houses, with their shapes, arrangements of spaces and construction features, and particularly rural houses, are an important part of our cultural heritage and they need to be valued and catalogued so that they can be protected. For this reason, it is important to be able to draw on studies that lay down the theoretical foundations for a logical, consistent reading of these architectures in our cultural and geographic environment.

"Valencian Rural Architecture" is one example of the author’s wide-ranging quest for a better knowledge our rural heritage. This is the starting point of an entire process of discovery of this facet of our culture that extends to his other works and publications also, progressively taking us to different parts of our countryside’s history and, of course, to the men and women who made it. He shows us their houses, their living spaces, the shape of their roofs, the arrangement of their walls, the types of opening and any other aspect of their architecture.

The reading that Miguel de Rey provides from a global viewpoint and the results he obtains in his analysis of a particular period demonstrate the existence of considerable cultural unity in our Community, more or less intensely so in particular areas. This study attempts to read and link all the areas from the mountains and plains of the north of Castellón province to the districts south of the River Vinalopó, from the flat land of the coastline to the mountains of the interior. We are shown how, during a particular period, the houses of alquerías and masías were approached in a similar way when designing the living spaces, despite the differences in certain aspects that are specific to particular geographic areas. We can also see how, during this period of alternates, the centre and south follow patterns that tend towards a certain standardisation, coinciding with the peak moments of population and building growth.

The parameters of this analysis of rural houses and the desire to find a reading of architecture that unites rural and urban open up new vistas for this type of analysis, as this catalogue is based on architectural principles and other fields which belong more properly to geography or agricultural economics are therefore set aside.

This methodological work is opportune in that it enables a rich heritage such as our rural architecture to be synthesised and valued. Set in a landscape that is rapidly being transformed, in many cases this heritage is in need of singular treatment and protection so that its values may be preserved and handed on to future generations.

About Rural Valencian Architecture
One of the many aspects of our rural heritage is the architecture of the Valencian countryside. This book focuses on examining it, in an attempt to raise awareness of the value of the culture of the farming world, which is sometimes very different from our present urban-centred set of values. If we wish to preserve this heritage we have to ensure that it is appreciated and defended in a changing society where the rural landscape and the elements that shape it are considered expendable and exchangeable for new spaces for urban speculation. For this reason, I believe it is important to foster new readings of an entire world to which little attention has been paid up to now: the agricultural landscape, the rural world, the artificial nature that our culture has created over time, as well as the eco-systems and parks that have survived the progressive anthropisation of our land and still maintain a natural balance.

Architects in particular find it interesting to discover the value of the landscape, its formal possibilities, the elements that shape it, its logic, its history. It is fascinating to look back to the sources and renew our understanding, to draw closer to the roots, to the earth, to approach what is ancestral. This is the challenge we must meet if we are not to fall into brutish ignorance nor stupid gesture. To act on the land, even to build near a town, is, increasingly, to build over what has been built. We must therefore get to know our heritage, both urban and rural, and know how to look at our landscape. We must take into account the value of the heritage that is not listed, the values of our rural culture, of nature and of the landscape, since natural and artificial are concepts that are difficult to separate in our culture. In this way we can make the newly planned fragments of our towns more legible, more differentiated, more our own, and abandon for ever the imprecise, impersonal layouts that currently constitute the vulgar, anodyne periphery of our cities, towns and villages.

"Rural Valencian Architecture" seeks to draw closer to the various architectures that we find in the Valencia region and break them down into their component parts in order to understand them. Basically, this book is a classification of houses according to a specific logic, inherited perhaps from the Romanticism that tried to discover the world with a dose of scientism.

This book attempts to approach this field of knowledge from a perspective that is perhaps slightly different. It eschews an excessively geographic angle and centres its analysis on the parameters of the architecture itself. In this way, it achieves a different perspective, forsaking the search for difference, for anecdote, for the picturesque even, and delves into the obvious, into what is directly concerned with construction, in an attempt to find the common denominator, the features that are specific to these architectures. It tries to find the spaces that we might call basic, or even ritual, in the houses of our vernacular societies.

It also attempts to move towards a global view of the Valencia region and find out whether it possesses a specific culture of its own. Consequently, architectures are examined from the north of Castellón province to the south of Alicante province, from the coastal districts to the mountains of the interior. As a result, we find that our rural houses from the modern age have a particular way of understanding architecture. This analysis pays particular attention to the architecture of the modern period, which acquired a stable form from the second half of the 17th century and was recognised by the Academy. While the models that were created did not forgo certain features that linked them to widely shared issues and concerns, they never lost sight of the particular conditions of the local building culture.

I would like to thank a number of people and bodies for their support for this book, without which my labours would have little social impact. Above all, however, I am grateful for the work of those who have played a rôle in our rural architecture, the people who have put their efforts into building, preserving and loving an architecture that is little valued, often unknown and at best accepted as picturesque, an architecture that is sometimes considered alien to the logic of our cultural discourse. It is only fair to express my thanks for their anonymous assistance to all the people who allowed their houses to be photographed, measured and analysed and sometimes, after inviting me to eat with them, confided in me.
